its predecessor operations, co-sponsored the formation of
ACE in 1985 in response to the severe shortage of liability
underwriting capacity during the mid-1980’s. ACE

formation of Mid Ocean Limited in 1992 in response to a severe

market in the early 1990’s. Mid Ocean was the first
of several property catastrophe reinsurers formed in response
to the market dislocation in the early 1990’s. Mid
Ocean was ultimately purchased by XL Capital Ltd. In 1998 for
approximately $2.9 billion.
